Leg (Spider) Vein Treatments - Combination Laser and Sclerotherapy

Before and After Gallery

WHAT ARE LEG (SPIDER) VEINS?

Spider veins - are small, thin veins that lie close to the surface of the skin. Although these super-fine veins are connected with the larger venous system, they are not an essential part of it.

A number of factors contribute to the development of spider veins, including heredity, pregnancy and other events that cause hormonal shifts, weight gain, occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing, and the use of certain medications.

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE FOR LEG (SPIDER) VEIN REMOVAL PROCEDURE?

At our office, we recommend a combination approach to leg vein treatment. The gold standard for leg vein removal is still sclerotherapy. At our practice we use a chemical called 72% chromated glycerin. This is a painless injectable and is used in 80 percent of the vessels that we treat. We also use the VBeam ™ and LightSheer ™ Diode lasers to clean up smaller spider veins which are resistant to standard sclerotherapy.

HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE? HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE NEEDED?

Treatment for leg vein treatment, using sclerotherapy or laser, takes anywhere from 5 minutes to 30 minutes depending on the number of vessels to be treated. Usually 1 to 5 treatments sessions are required to see a 50 to 95% improvement. These are spaced out every 4 weeks.

WHAT IS THE PRE CARE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE LEG (SPIDER) VEIN REMOVAL PROCEDURE USING SCLEROTHERAPY OR LASER?

Typically, we ask our patients to discontinue the use of blood thinners such as aspirin or ibuprofen 7 days before your treatment. It is also wise to stay out of intense sunlight (or tanning beds) beginning 1 week prior to your treatment.

HOW MUCH DISCOMFORT CAN I EXPECT FROM THE TREATMENT?

There is minimal discomfort with our sclerotherapy procedure. We use such a tiny needle and the solution has a numbing chemical in it so the pain is barely notable. With the lasers such as VBeam ™ or the LightSheer ™ ..pain is also minimal. A cooling spray is applied with the VBeam ™ laser procedure. The LightSheer ™ laser uses as cooling chilled tip. Pain usually is described as a very mild "rubber" band snap discomfort. Cool compresses and medications such as Motrin ™ or Advil ™ can readily help to alleviate any discomfort.

HOW LONG DOES THE SKIN TAKE TO HEAL AFTER SCLEROTHERAPY OR LASER?

Leg vein removal is minimally traumatic to the skin. Slight bruising or purpura is all that is noted post op. Depending on the location, bruising can take up to ten days to resolve. Full healing though takes up to 4 to 6 weeks so treatment intervals are carried out after this time.

WHAT ABOUT POST OP CARE AFTER SCLEROTHERAPY OR LASER?

We recommend a post leg vein treatment system. To maintain your cosmetic benefit, we also recommend some excellent support hosery. Concealing makeup, e.g. Jane Iredale ™, can be used to minimize the color changes if bruising occurs in a noticeable location.

HOW LONG WILL THE BENEFITS FROM LEG VEIN REMOVAL LAST?

The benefits from the Leg vein removal procedure, using sclerotherapy or laser, can last for several years. Repeat treatments are sometimes required to further enhance your results but this is determined on a case by case basis. In our experience, patient satisfaction has been extremely high for this procedure. Results, however, may vary from patient to patient.
